Obituary Sister Rose Martin, O.P. As she celebrated her centenary year of life, God called our Sister Rose Martin home on February 2, 2025, at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse in Fremont, California.

Rosalie was born in 1924 in San Francisco, California, to Cyril Martin and Roslie Schutz, natives of Alsace-Lorraine, France. She had one brother, Francis Cyril Martin. Rosalie spent her youth in San Francisco and attended St. Paul’s Elementary School and St. Paul’s High School.

In 1937, following the death of her father, the family moved to St. Anthony’s Parish, San Francisco, where she met the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose. Rosalie attributed her decision to enter religious life to the prayers of the Sisters through the intercession of St. Martin de Porres. She entered the Dominican Sisters in 1949 and made her first profession of vows in 1951.

In preparation for the teaching ministry, Sister Rose Martin, earned a B.A. degree from Queen of the Holy Rosary College, Mission San Jose, and later earned elementary teaching credentials for California and Oregon.

For 52 years, Sister ministered in Catholic schools teaching elementary school children. In Northern California she taught at St. Mary of the Palms and St. Leonard School, Fermont; St. Vincent’s School, San Rafael; The Albertinum and St. Mary of the Angels School, Ukiah; St. Edward’s School, Newark; St. William’s School, Los Altos; St. Frances Cabrini School, San Jose; and St. Simon’s School, Los Altos. She taught in Southern California at St. Catherine’s Academy, Anaheim; St. Callistus School, Garden Grove, and St. Ignatius School, Los Angeles. In Portland, Oregon, she taught at St. Therese School. For three years she taught at Colegio Junipero, Mexico City. In addition to classroom teaching, Sister taught parish religious education classes for nine years including Saturday religious classes for the Pomo Indians in Mendocino County, California.

Gifted with artistic talent, Sister Rose Martin studied painting and contributed works with seascapes, landscapes, and floral arrangements to sell at the Sisters’ annual holiday boutique. Sister brought fun, joy and humor to students in her classes and her Sisters in community, sharing creative and imaginative costumes for many celebrations.

In 2013, Sister Rose Martin was assigned to St. Martin’s Community at the Motherhouse where she devoted herself to the ministry of prayer. On Sunday morning, February 2, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, when the Church was observing the World Day of Prayer for the Consecrated Life, Sister Rose Martin entered into the radiant light of her heavenly home!

The Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Carol Marie will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 11, at 10:30 am at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse Chapel, 43326 Mission Circle, Fremont, followed by burial in God’s Acre, the Sisters’ cemetery at the Motherhouse.
